The Itch-Scratch Paradox: A Microbial Perspective

Scratching an itch is one of those primal instincts that feels both incredibly satisfying and instantly regrettable. It’s well known that scratching can worsen inflammation, but a recent study in Science adds an unexpected twist: scratching might also play a role in defending the skin against harmful bacteria. The study found that scratching amplifies this response by further activating these immune cells, leading to more inflammation.
