Human microbiome research, the study of the microbial communities (including  fungi, bacteria and viruses) that inhabit the human body,  is a rapidly growing field of  research that  has led to a greater understanding of the complex interactions between the human body and the microorganisms that inhabit it.  Microbiome research has increased dramatically in recent years, driven by advances in technology and significant reductions in the cost of analysis. Research  has unlocked a wealth of data,  leading to the discovery of previously unknown interactions and effects, with the potential to lead to new diagnostic techniques and interventional strategies.  Limitations remain including the high levels of noise in the samples, lack of unique connections between biological interpretations and experimental observations and unreliable comparisons across samples.
